Scammers are scamming

There’s no shortage of scammers trying to scam people. It happens via text, phone calls, e-mails and over social media. I probably get 3-5 attempts daily. I work with the elderly population and hear from them all the time about the endless phone calls they get. You have to be suspicious, and not quick to act on your emotions. The scammers are trying to play on your emotions; they oftentimes want you to respond to an urgent issue. They claim to be from your local bank, insurance company, local law enforcement, or some other governmental agency. Sometimes they pose as an “extended family” member in need of dire financial help. Some more gradual scams are the “romance” ones over social media. Keys to not falling victim: verify identity of person; don’t give out your personal information to strangers; don’t act right away – seek advice from trusted family member, notify the authorities or the agency they claim to be representing.
