MIND YOUR MONEY
This blog is about educating people about the basics of financial literacy and making better choices by examining our beliefs, thinking, underlying needs and emotions with money decisions.
My name is Kevin Jesse and I grew up in a family of ten (seven boys, three girls) and my parents struggled with their finances–having so many kids. Mom use to call us “vultures” after we devoured 3 large pizzas in under five minutes for dinner. We went through a gallon of milk just for breakfast. I think most of my brothers wore the same hand me down suit for special events. But we always had someone to play/fight with and my childhood was never a dull moment. However, there was not enough money between paychecks and financial anxiety was always present in the home.
Needless to say we were never taught the basics of financial education, nor did I learn anything in school. Fortunately, I was motivated not to repeat the financial stress I experienced from my childhood. Throughout my adult years, I’ve been through the common financial experiences of most (debt, career and income, buying house, retirement planning and investing, saving kids education, and withdrawal planning). I’ve made mistakes along the way and learned some lessons. In my 50’s my wife and I achieved financial independence.
I bring lived experience to personal finance that I hope to share with others. I have a work background in clinical social work (former therapist) in correctional and healthcare settings. This gives me unique perspective in understanding how and why we make financial decisions and how we can improve this process. The mind does play a big role with our money.
